Helen is Head of School (Home Economics). Helen holds an undergraduate Bachelor of Education (Home Economics and Biology) from St. Angela’s College, NUI; an M.Litt. (Design Education), NCAD, NUI; a Postgraduate Diploma in Education Studies (SEN), Trinity College, and is currently completing her PhD studies at NUI Galway. Helen was Programme Director BA/PME ITE programme 2016-2020 and Head of Dept. (Acting) 2015-2016. Helen joined the academic staff of the College in 2005 as Lecturer in Home Economics and has taught and led modules in Home Economics across a range of programmes at all levels; pre-undergraduate; undergraduate and postgraduate. Prior to joining the College, she was a post-primary teacher of Home Economics and Biology. Helen is involved in a wide range of research and innovation projects nationally and internationally. Her research interests are in the areas of Home Economics; Practice Theories; Sustainable Consumption; Education for Sustainable and Responsible Living and Teacher Education.


Helen’s research focuses on Home Economics; Practice Theories; Sustainable Consumption; Education for Sustainable and Responsible Living and Teacher Education. 

She is actively involved in a range of research projects working collaboratively with colleagues nationally and internationally, including currently: St. Angela’s College, NUI Galway; South West College, NI; Workforce Development Trust, UK, Alexandre Dumas, France, Sustainable Europe Research Institute Germany and the Centre for Collaborative Learning for Sustainable Development, Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.
