Specific Purpose Contract - Maternity Cover

Role Summary

The School of Home Economics, St. Angela’s College are currently recruiting for a Home Economics Assistant.
The Home Economics Assistant will be required to work in all or some of the following areas;

  • Food Studies
  • Textiles, Fashion and Design
  • Family Resource Management
  • Art and Design

Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities attached to the post of Home Economics Assistant will include the following:

  • Advanced preparation for practical laboratory sessions as agreed with lecturer in the area;
  • Ensuring class supplies are available in advance of practical sessions;
  • Organising and setting up demonstrations for practical laboratory sessions and for video recorded deomonstations;
  • Taking ownership of assigned tasks and prioritising competing tasks in order to ensure that they are completed on time and to a high standard with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ensuring that laboratory equipment is safe and in working order for practical laboratory sessions and demonstrations;
  • Assisting the lecturer during and after class as required;
  • Assisting students during class preparation time
  • Ensuring practical laboratories are appropriately maintained
  • Completing annual stocktaking and updating inventory in:
    - Textiles, Fashion and Design
    - Food Studies
    - Family Resource Management
    - Art and Design
  • Maintaining stores and equipment stocks.
  • Liaising with suppliers in relation to researching equipment/materials, sourcing quotations and costing equipment and materials required.
  • Checking work thoroughly to ensure it is completed accurately and to a high standard.
  • Attendance at and contribution to team and School meetings.
  • Other such duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Head of Home Economics.

Person Specification

Candidates likely to be called for interview will have most or all of the following requirements:

  • Relevant qualification and / or experience in the identified Home Economics area.
  • Familiarity with specialised equipment in Food Studies, Textiles, Fashion and Design, Family Resource Management and Art and Design
  • Competent IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel etc.)
  • A sound understanding of Food Safety and Hygiene Regulations together with the principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP).
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • At all times working efficiently using own initiative and as part of a team.

Reporting Relationship

Reporting will be to the Head of the School of Home Economics and /or College President.


This is a Maternity Cover specific purpose contract up to December 2021.


The salary for this role will be at the appropriate point in line with current Government Pay Policy, (€552.70 - €627.56 per week - New Entrants)


The post will be based at St. Angela's College, Lough Gill, Sligo and some assignments will require attendance at other sites.
