Discovering Music Programme: Special Educational Needs Research and Training Partnership.

This project aims to identify a music education programme for children and young people with Special Education Needs (SEN) in Sligo. A Special Discovering Music Programme will be implemented over a 2 year period 2015/2016 using evidence based approaches with a view to increasing participation of students with SEN in Music Generation Sligo’s programme. The project aims to promote quality music education in the lives of children and young people who need special support and consequently to measure the impact on children and tutors. This is a unique collaborative and strategic partnership combines the expertise of two key partners, Music Generation Sligo (MGS) and St Angela’s College Centre for Special Educational Needs, Inclusion & Diversity (CSENID) in order to research perspectives and best practice on Special Education Needs with specific regard to the delivery of music programmes.

Supporting Students with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) in Transition from Primary to Post-Primary Education 2014

This research explored the challenges experienced by students with ASD as they transition from primary to post-primary school and the supports available to students during this transition. It identified the role that strong positive inter-relationships between the students with ASDs, their parents, peers, teachers at both primary and post-primary level play in this process. This research focused the child at the centre of these relationships and recognised the key role of ‘significant others’ (NCSE, 2013) in facilitating transition.
