Course Overview

The General Learning Disabilities module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of General Learning Disabilities and the implications for teaching and learning. Understandings of General Learning Disabilities are presented and explored in the context of current educational policy and legislation. Participants are introduced to a broad range of approaches designed to facilitate the inclusion of learners with General Learning Disabilities across all educational settings. This is delivered using online components and face-to-face workshops.

By completed SEN Stand Alone Modules Application Form‌ - Closing date for applications for this module will be December 2020.  Due to the large volume of applications in recent months, it is strongly advised to apply as soon as you have decided on your preferred option as places will be awarded on a first come basis.

Requirements and Assessment

Continuous assessment will apply throughout the programme. It will combine coursework on relevant aspects of Special Educational Needs with e-tivities, discussion boards, portfolio/project-based learning, literature reviews and case studies, which will be carried out within an appropriate educational context during the academic year.  The concept of the ‘reflective practitioner’ will be a basic criterion permeating all forms of assessment.

As well as General Learning Disabilities, the Centre for Special Educational Needs, Inclusion and Diversity at St. Angela’s College, Sligo has developed an suite of additional modules at postgraduate level in the following specific interest areas:

Completion of two modules from the above suite of modules (30 ECTS) = Postgraduate Certificate
Completion of four modules from the above suite of modules (60 ECTS) = Postgraduate Diploma
Participants may progress to Masters level on successful completion (an honours standard) of three modules from those listed above which must include the on-line blended learning module on Educational Research Methods.

Further Education

Participants may progress to Masters level on successful completion of three modules which must include the online blended learning module: Educational Research Methods. The exit award will be a Master of Arts in Professional Studies in Special Educational Needs.
